Ruth
“And Ruth said, Intreat me not to leave thee, or to return from following after thee: for whither thou goest, I will go; and where thou lodgest, I will lodge: thy people shall be my people, and thy God my God.” Ruth 1:16–17
Ruth was a foreigner in Israel. She didn’t grow up in God’s covenant people, and she wasn’t born into the expected circles of belonging. By all outward appearances, she could have been on the outside looking in. Yet Ruth made a choice that changed everything. She chose faith, loyalty, and devotion—not because it was easy or because it guaranteed comfort, but because she recognized God’s hand in her life and wanted to belong to Him.
When Ruth declared, “Thy people shall be my people, and thy God my God,” she wasn’t just pledging loyalty to Naomi; she was choosing a covenant, choosing God’s family, and stepping into the lineage that would eventually lead to Jesus Christ. Her example shows us that true belonging is not about where we start or the circumstances we inherit—it is about the choices we make and the faith we exercise.
Ephesians 2:19 reminds us, “Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God.” Like Ruth, each of us can step into God’s family with confidence, regardless of where our story begins. Belonging is something we accept and embrace through faith.
Reflection Questions:
What does it mean to you to belong to God?
How can you, like Ruth, choose loyalty and faith even when it feels hard?
Are there moments this week where you can act in a way that shows you are part of God’s family?
Ruth teaches us that belonging is a choice—a choice to follow, to trust, and to commit to God’s family. The Mirror reflects this truth: your divine worth and your place in God’s family are not defined by circumstances, but by your faith and your willingness to step forward. Remember, when you choose God, you are never outside His love—you belong.
