The Helmet of Salvation

Divine Identity

"Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God."

-Ephesians 6:17

Divine Identity means knowing that you are a son of God, created with a noble purpose. Just like knights and heroes of old who carried a crest that showed who they served, you carry the mark of belonging to the greatest King of all. When you remember who you are and Whose you are, you find courage to face battles, strength to resist temptations, and confidence to rise to your calling. Developing Divine Identity is like putting on your helmet of salvation—it provides protection and reminds you that you are chosen, valued, and destined for greatness. To earn the Helmet of Salvation you must show that you guard your mind and that you know who you really are as a son of God.

The Muster

Call the young men to warrior stance by saying,
"Guardians, assemble!" (Use drums if avaliable)
Lead the group in simple breath work.
Invite calm and strength.

The Flame

Invite the Guardians to share their quests experiences from the month, encouraging both successes and challenges.

Then, briefly introduce the new medallion and virtue from the top section followed by sharing one of the mentors from below.

When shadows whisper, loud and near,

I guard my mind — I will not fear.

A child of God, I stand, I stay,

His truth will guide my thoughts today.

“Look unto me in every thought; doubt not, fear not.”

-D&C 6:36

The TRIAL

The Trial is a physical challenge designed to awaken the body and mind to the virtue being practiced that week. It could be a race, a teamwork exercise, a silent challenge, or a test of restraint — but always with spiritual purpose behind it. The Trial helps anchor the pattern of the program: Listen. Act. Remember.

  • It begins with listening to a story or principle that sets the tone.

  • Then, the youth act — putting that principle into motion with their whole body.

  • Finally, they remember — through reflection, a written vow, and the medallion that seals the moment.

This rhythm of action and reflection helps move truth from the head to the heart — and into real life.

Here are some suggested activities to go along with Divine Identity:

  • Divine Identity Treasure Hunt – Hide scrolls or tokens around a field, each with a scripture or phrase about Divine Identity. Young men collect them and build the “treasure of truth.” At each point, have each young man write something about the Divine Identity of another young man such as, "You are brave."

  • Enemy of Lies Dodgeball or Gaga Ball – Classic dodgeball or gaga ball, but each ball represents “lies” (e.g., “You’re not good enough,” “You can’t change”). When a player is hit, the young man must call out a truth of Divine Identity, "I am a Son of God!" to re-enter play. Describe the symbolism before playing.

The Inscription & Quest Selection

After the physical trial, the young men will be gathered with their legion (age based group) for the inscription of the name of the mentor onto their sword or when a medallion is earned to write their vow on their sword and select a quest for the following month. The quest is part of what they need to do to earn the medallion. Encourage the guardians to come up with their own meaningful quest related to the virtue or to select a quest from the suggestions below:

  • Write down 10 unique qualities or spiritual gifts that you have.

  • Read a scripture or quote that teaches about being a child of God, and write what it means to you.

  • Memorize a song or scripture about being a child of God and reflect on the words.

  • Write a letter to your future self reminding yourself of who you are and what matters most.

  • Create a “coat of arms” or shield design that represents your values, faith, or strengths, and who you want to become.

  • Spend 10 minutes in silent reflection about your life’s purpose, then write down what came to mind.

  • Write a short personal motto that reminds you of your divine identity.

  • Choose one of your talents and use it to bless or help someone else.

  • Find a way to remind someone else about their Divine Identity. Maybe you write out positive traits or spiritual gifts that they have and give it to them.

The Circle of Fire

Gather the guardians to a circle once more to award medallions & conclude the day as follows:

As a Leader awards an earned medal: "You remembered who you are — a son of God. You guarded your thoughts and chose truth over doubt. You are now trusted with the Helmet of Salvation. May your mind stay clear and your spirit anchored in identity and light."

Recite together the Guardian's Oath:

I stand as a Guardian of Light.

I speak truth, even when it's hard.

I strengthen my heart with honor.

I walk in peace, but I stand bold in battle.

I guard the sacred, at all costs.

I am a son of God — held by Heavenly Parents.

I grow strong in truth and courage,

when I carry light into the world.

I will protect the light within me!

TO END THE DAY:
Leader: What are you?
All Together (with strength: Guardians of Light!
LeaderWhat do you fight for?
All Together: Truth! Honor! Right!
